International Student Team

The application round for 2016/17 is now closed.

Banco Santander has provided the University with funds of £15,000 to support Cambridge students (both undergraduates and graduates) who wish to undertake a period of research or study in any country within the Banco Santander Network as listed below:

Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay, USA

Grants of up to £1000 will be awarded.

Please note South Korea is no longer included in the Banco Santander Network and therefore applications cannot be accepted for this destination.

Students with ambitious and interesting plans for research or study in countries within the Banco Santander Network are invited to apply for these mobility grants. Please read the eligibility criteria and application guidelines carefully before completing the application form.

Criteria

The principal criterion for the award of a grant is that the proposed project will make a demonstrable and tangible contribution to the applicant’s research or studies. Applicants must explain how the proposed project will satisfy this requirement and the strong support of their supervisor or Director of Studies will be required. In the case of graduate students it is expected that the proposed travel will have a strong connection to their research project. For undergraduates the proposal must demonstrate direct relevance to their studies, for example by being relevant for a dissertation or some other specialised study.

Eligibility

  • University of Cambridge students studying at all levels are eligible for these grants.
  • Travel must be to one of the countries in the Banco Santander Network listed above.
  • Travel must take place between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018. Travel undertaken before 1 April 2016 will not be considered and grants may not be deferred.
  • Grants are available to cover the costs of travel, accommodation and attendance at courses if applicable.
  • Applications will not be accepted from students who are undertaking an undergraduate year abroad.
  • Applications from students to undertake language courses will only be considered where learning a particular language is required to support research and the need had not been identified prior to commencing studies at Cambridge.
  • Students cannot receive funding for research or study undertaken in their country of nationality.
  • Funding will only be awarded for attendance at a conference where the student will be presenting.
  • Grants will not be awarded to substitute or supplement funding for fundamental aspects of research.

All awards will be conditional on having completed a satisfactory risk assessment for the proposed activity.

Application guidelines

  • All applicants must complete the application form and send this as a PDF attachment to internationalstudents@admin.cam.ac.uk
  • The application requires you to detail the costs of the proposed trip, separating out the costs of travel, accommodation, course fees if applicable and any other costs.
  • Applicants are required to include details of any other applications they have made to cover the costs of the proposed trip, or any partial funding that has already been secured.
  • An application must be supported by a student’s supervisor (graduates) or Director of Studies (undergraduates). Electronic signatures are acceptable.
  • Grants are awarded once annually; this year’s application round opens on Thursday 1 December and closes 5pm Tuesday 31 January. Applications received after this time will not be considered.
  • Details of their proposed activity should be outlined on the application in no more than 200 words.
  • Funding is limited and only a small number of awards will be made.
  • Applications will be assessed by a panel, interviews will not be held, and outcomes will be communicated in March. No feedback will be given.
  • Payment will be made by cheque.
  • On return to Cambridge following the trip for which the grant is awarded, students will be required to complete a form confirming their expenditure.
  • If for any reason the trip does not take place, the mobility grant must be returned in full. If a student returns from the activity early, the International Student Team must be informed to determine whether any of the grant should be recovered.
  • A list of students awarded a grant will be provided to Santander. The information will include name, email address, date of birth, course, year of study and brief details of the mobility activity for which the award was granted. The data will be used by Santander to analyse the impact of the funding and may contact recipients to further understand how the grant has benefitted them. The data will be shared for these purposes within the Santander group. The data will be protected as required under the UK Data Protection Act.
  • In submitting a completed application, you are confirming the information provided is accurate and you agree to the conditions for the grant outlined in these guidelines.
